Any places to hang out with animals, other than shelters?

I really miss being around cats and dogs, but finding a shelter that takes volunteers hasn’t been as easy as I thought. Anyone got other ideas on where I could spend time with animals? I’m kinda new to this since I had to move far from family and friends with pets. Most rentals here only allow fish tanks or small pets, so having my own isn’t possible right now.

Look up a cat cafe nearby… they’re becoming more common!

Pet sitting could be perfect… and you get paid for some cuddle time.

Try looking into foster-based rescues or animal sanctuaries in your area. Some places even work with programs like meals on wheels to help people care for their pets. And of course, cat cafes are always a good idea too.

@Westley
Totally agree on helping foster-based rescues! They often have events out in public where they could use extra help, especially when there are multiple animals needing attention. Events are usually posted on social media or the rescue’s website. In my area, these events are mainly for dogs, but we do get a few cat events too.

Good luck finding some furry friends!

I do pet sitting and it works great for me!

Dog walking and pet sitting are both good options.

Petsmart sometimes needs volunteers to help care for cats.

I actually got to know one of my neighbors this way! He’d stop to talk to me about my dog on walks, and now we’ve become friends. Now, he even comes by once a week to play with my dog, brush him, and give him treats. If we’re out and passing his place, we stop for a quick visit too. He loves my dog so much that he even babysits him when we’re out. They’ve become such great pals!

Pet Cafes: Many cities now have cafes where you can spend time with cats or even dogs. Some cafes even let you adopt pets if you’re interested.

Farm Visits or Sanctuaries: Depending on your area, some farms or sanctuaries let visitors interact with animals like goats, sheep, or horses.

Put an ad up in your neighborhood offering to walk dogs for free or a small fee. I’m disabled and sometimes need help walking my two large dogs, so people like you are a big help!

Pet sitting is a great idea!

You could also check sites like Nextdoor to see if there are any pet groups. I started one in my area, and now we have over 200 members! You could also ask if there are any dog park meet-ups or puppy playdates. Some people may even need help socializing foster animals.

A petting zoo could be a good option.

Boarding facilities are another good place to look!

- Cat cafes, if there are any around you

- Pet sitting or dog walking (I know someone who does it through Rover, and they really enjoy it)

- Foster groups may be more open to volunteers than big shelters.

If you’re in the UK, check out Borrow My Doggy. My friends use it and have loved the experience!

Dog parks and cat cafes… both great options!

I totally get it… being around animals can make such a difference. Maybe try pet-friendly cafes or parks where people bring their dogs? Some rescues or farms have open days where you can spend time with animals too. Hope you find a good spot to enjoy some pet time!
