Anyone else's dog super anxious all the time?

My dog gets super anxious, even when nothing is happening. Like, I get fireworks and thunderstorms being stressful, but he’ll just randomly pace or start chewing on things. IDK if it’s separation anxiety or what, but it’s getting tough to manage. Anyone else dealing with this? Any tips?

Sounds like it could be separation anxiety. My dog used to go crazy whenever I left the house. Started crate training and it helped a lot.

Yeah, I was thinking it might be that. How long did it take for your dog to adjust to the crate?

@Baer
Took a few weeks, but I made sure to keep it a positive space—lots of treats and comfy blankets. Now she just goes in there to chill even when I’m home.

Could be environmental changes too. Did you recently move or change up your routine? That can stress them out.

No major moves, but my work schedule changed. I’m gone more during the day now. Maybe that’s messing with him?

@Baer
Yeah, that could be it. Dogs get used to routines, so any change can throw them off. Maybe try leaving some calming music or an old shirt with your scent?

Has your vet ruled out medical issues? Sometimes what looks like anxiety could be something else.

Good point, I haven’t taken him in yet. I’ll book an appointment just to be sure.

There are meds for severe anxiety too, if it’s really bad. My vet put my dog on something during fireworks season and it helped a ton.

What kind of meds? I didn’t know they prescribed stuff for dogs too.

@Laken
Yeah, vets can prescribe SSRIs or even benzodiazepines for specific situations. It’s basically like anti-anxiety meds for humans.

Exercise and mental stimulation can make a huge difference. My dog was anxious until I upped his daily walks and got him some puzzle toys.

I do walks, but maybe not enough. How long do you take your dog out for?

@Baer
At least 45 min a day, plus some playtime. Some dogs just need more movement to burn off nervous energy.
