My puppy has always been playful, but lately, they’ve been acting super scared of things they never cared about before. Like, they used to love walks, but now they’re hesitant. Is this normal? What should I do?
Timeline of Puppy Fear Periods
Puppies typically go through at least one significant fear phase, sometimes more:
8-10 weeks: This happens when most puppies are settling into their new homes.
4-6 months: Coincides with teething and other common puppy development challenges.
Around 9 months: Adolescence kicks in, bringing hormonal changes and potential shifts in behavior.
14-18 months: Fearfulness may return during late adolescence as they continue to mature.
Signs Your Puppy is Going Through a Fear Period
Signs Your Puppy Might Be in a Fear Period
Suddenly fearful of people, other animals, or everyday objects.
Easily startled by routine sounds or environmental changes.
Showing fearful behaviors like cowering, barking, tail tucking, or even accidental urination.
Avoiding activities or places they previously enjoyed, such as walks or certain rooms.

Yep, that’s a puppy fear period. It’s totally normal and happens at different ages. Usually around 8-10 weeks, then again at 4-6 months, and even later during adolescence.

Oh wow, I didn’t know this was a thing. How long does it last?

Usually 2-3 weeks! Just keep things positive, don’t force anything, and use treats to reassure them.

My pup went through this too! They suddenly got scared of the vacuum, lol. I just introduced it slowly with treats, and now they’re fine.

That makes sense. I’ll try reintroducing things in a low-pressure way.

If your pup is really struggling, a trainer or vet can help. Fear periods are normal, but extreme fear might need extra support.

Good point. A vet checkup can rule out any health issues too!

Socializing early (like 3-12 weeks) helps prevent long-term fear. Just keep introducing new stuff in a fun way!

I wish I had done more of that! Is it too late to start now?

@Keller
Nope! You can still do controlled exposure. Just go slow and keep it positive!

If the fear seems extreme or lasts too long, definitely check with a vet or trainer. Also, pet insurance can help cover unexpected issues.

Pet insurance? Didn’t think about that. Any recommendations?

Spot Pet Insurance is a good option! Covers accidents, illnesses, and even preventative care.
