So I found this super shy cat near my place and I’ve been thinking about trying to tame it. Never done anything like this before and IDK if it’s even possible. Like, how do you even start?? I read you shouldn’t rush them and just let them take control at first. Anyone here tried this before and had it work out?
Yeah I’ve dealt with a semi-feral one before. First thing I did was literally ignore her when I was around. Gave her space so she didn’t feel cornered or anything.

Wait fr? Just ignoring the cat actually helps?
@Denver
Yep! It’s like letting them be the boss lol. They come around on their own terms.
Toys helped me big time. I used a feather stick and a laser pointer. Gave us some safe distance while still getting interaction going.

Laser pointer sounds fun ngl but isn’t that overstimulating for them?
@Terry
Only if you overdo it. I kept it short and chill. It’s more about breaking the ice really.
FYI some cats just don’t wanna be tamed. Especially older ferals. Like, their personality might not allow it. Gotta respect that too.

True. I tried with one for months… he was just not having it. Still fed him though, he stuck around
You should def try Trap Neuter Release (TNR) if you can’t tame them. Helps a lot with the stray population and keeps them healthier too.

What’s TNR again?

Trap Neuter Release. You trap the cat, vet does the spay/neuter + vaccines, then release it back. They even get a lil ear tip to show it’s done.
Kittens are way easier to tame btw. If it’s older, just know it might take months or never really work. Gotta be super patient.

How long did it take for yours?

For the kitten, around 2 weeks. For the older one… gave up after 3 months lol. Still take care of him though.
