Thinking about getting a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, but I keep reading about health issues MVD, syringomyelia, ear infections, all that. How bad is it really? Is it manageable? Would love to hear from people who actually own one!
I have one! Love him to bits, but yeah, health issues are real. MVD is super common, and mine has mild SM too. Vet visits are a must, but they’re the sweetest dogs ever.

MVD? What’s that?
@Noor
Mitral Valve Disease! Basically, a heart condition where the valve leaks and makes the heart work harder. Super common in Cavaliers.
@Noor
Yikes… does it show up early, or is it more of an old-age thing?

Usually later in life, but some get it pretty young. Regular vet checks help catch it early tho.
Ear infections are the worst part for me. Their floppy ears trap moisture, and I have to clean them all the time or they get nasty.

Same! My pup had a bad one last month. Had to get meds from the vet.

Any tips on preventing them? Or is it just inevitable?
@Fitz
I use a vet-recommended ear cleaner weekly, and make sure to dry his ears after baths. Helps a lot!
Syringomyelia is no joke. My Cavalier has it, and she scratches at her neck a lot. Meds help, but I wish breeders did more to prevent it.

Yeah, I heard it’s a spinal thing? What exactly happens?
@Griffin
It’s when fluid-filled cavities form in the spinal cord and put pressure on nerves. Can be painful. Some dogs need surgery, but mine is on meds.
Honestly, as long as you’re ready for vet bills and some extra care, they’re amazing dogs. Super affectionate and loyal.

Yeah, but do you think pet insurance is worth it for them?
@Kim
For Cavaliers? 100% yes. MVD, SM, ear infections… vet bills add up FAST. Insurance helps a ton.
