So I just found out onions are toxic to dogs, and now I’m kinda freaking out. I cook with onions all the time, and my dog might’ve eaten some scraps before. Does anyone know how serious this is? Like, does a tiny amount matter or only a lot?
Yeah, onions are super dangerous for dogs. Even a small amount can cause issues. They mess with red blood cells and can lead to anemia.

Wait, anemia? What does that even mean for a dog?
@Andi
It basically means their red blood cells get destroyed, so they don’t get enough oxygen. Symptoms can be stuff like pale gums, weakness, fast heartbeat, or even collapse.
No safe amount, bro. Onion powder is even worse than fresh onions. If your dog ate some, you should call a vet ASAP.

Damn, even onion powder? I thought maybe cooked onions wouldn’t be as bad.
@Andi
Nope, raw or cooked, it’s all bad. Even stuff like onion-flavored broths can be risky.
If your dog ate onions, don’t try to make them puke unless your vet says so. They might do a stomach pump or give activated charcoal to help absorb toxins.

Noted. I’ll check with my vet if I ever suspect it. Didn’t know charcoal was a thing for dogs.
Some dogs are more sensitive than others. Shiba Inus and Akitas, for example, are extra vulnerable to onion poisoning.

Whoa, that’s wild. Wonder why some breeds are affected more than others?
@Andi
Has to do with their genetics and how their red blood cells react. Some dogs just don’t handle certain toxins as well.
Btw, if you wanna give your dog veggies, there are safe options like carrots, sweet potatoes, peas, etc.

Good to know! My dog loves carrots, so I’ll stick to that.
