I was making breakfast this morning, and my cat was eyeing my eggs like they were the best thing ever. Got me wondering… are eggs actually safe for cats? Cooked or raw? Would love to hear what you guys think!
Yeah, cats can eat eggs, but they should be cooked. Raw eggs can have salmonella and some protein that blocks nutrient absorption.

Wait, so raw eggs are bad? I thought cats in the wild eat raw stuff all the time.
@Oli
Yeah, wild cats do eat raw eggs, but domesticated cats shouldn’t. Raw eggs can have bacteria like salmonella or E. coli, which can make them sick.
@Oli
Also, raw egg whites have avidin, which makes it hard for cats to absorb nutrients. So it’s better to stick to cooked eggs.

My cat loves scrambled eggs! I just make sure they’re plain, no salt or seasoning. I heard too much salt is bad for them.
Yep, too much salt can be toxic for cats. Vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration are just some of the risks.

Dang, I used to give my cat tiny bites of my breakfast eggs, but they always had salt… guess I need to stop that.
What about eggshells? I heard they have calcium, but IDK if they’re safe.

Eggshells are actually good for cats if they’re powdered! Whole shells, not so much, since they could be hard to digest.

Yeah, but better to check with a vet first before adding anything like that to their diet.
How often can cats eat eggs tho? Like, is it an everyday thing or just a treat?

Eggs should be an occasional treat, not a regular meal. Too much fat and cholesterol can lead to weight issues and even pancreatitis.

Yep! Maybe once or twice a week in small amounts is fine. Just don’t make it their main food.
So bottom line… cooked eggs = good in moderation, raw eggs = no, and no seasoning or salt, right?

You got it! And if you wanna give eggshells, powder them first and maybe check with your vet. That’s pretty much the summary.
