Can cats eat tuna, is it safe?

I always thought cats and tuna were like the perfect match, but now I’m hearing mixed things. My cat LOVES tuna, but I’m wondering if it’s actually safe as a regular thing. I know some people say it’s fine in small amounts, but IDK if there are risks? Anyone know the real deal?

Tuna’s cool as an occasional treat, but not as a full meal. It’s got protein, omega-3s, and vitamins, but too much can cause issues like mercury poisoning or making your cat refuse other foods.

Mercury poisoning?? That’s a thing for cats??

@Hadley
Yeah, too much tuna over time can lead to it. It messes with their nervous system and coordination. If your cat eats tuna regularly, probs good to check with a vet.

My cat gets obsessed with tuna lol. I heard they can get addicted and refuse to eat other stuff. Anyone else had this happen?

Yup, my cat legit stopped eating her normal food cuz she only wanted tuna. Had to cut back and mix it with her usual food to get her back on track.

If your cat’s being picky, you can use tuna juice to flavor their food instead of giving them full chunks. Also helps with hydration.

Wait, tuna juice?? Just the water from canned tuna?

@San
Yeah, the liquid from tuna in water (not oil). A little bit mixed in their food or water can help if they’re being fussy.

Cats are obligate carnivores, so meat-based diets are best. Tuna has good protein but shouldn’t be more than 10% of their daily calories.

So bottom line—tuna is okay in moderation, but too much = bad. Good to know!
