Can dogs eat asparagus, is it safe?

I’ve been wondering if it’s okay to give my dog asparagus. I know some veggies are safe, but IDK about this one. Anyone tried it? Any risks I should know about?

Yeah, dogs can eat asparagus, but it’s best to cook it first. Raw stalks are kinda tough and hard to digest.

Oh, good to know. Does it have any health benefits?

Just don’t give them asparagus ferns! Those are toxic and can make dogs sick.

Wait, what’s an asparagus fern? Never heard of it.

It’s the leafy part of the plant, not the part we eat. It has something called sapogenins that can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs.

I gave my dog asparagus once, and his pee smelled weird after. Is that normal?

Yeah, totally normal! It happens to humans too. Nothing to worry about.

Anyone know if dogs with kidney issues can eat asparagus?

Actually, it’s okay for dogs with kidney disease since it’s low in phosphorus and potassium. But always check with a vet first!

If your dog has pancreatitis, I’d be careful with asparagus. The fiber might irritate their stomach.

Oh, good point! I guess it’s best to ask a vet if your dog has any health issues before adding new foods.
