I was thinking of giving my dog some broccoli, but IDK if it’s actually good for them. I know some human foods can be bad for dogs, so I don’t wanna risk it. Has anyone tried giving their pup broccoli? Any issues or benefits?
Yeah, dogs can eat broccoli, but only in moderation. Too much of it can upset their stomach cuz of something called isothiocyanates.

Oh, never heard of isothiocyanates before… what do they do?
@Cai
They can cause gastric irritation if a dog eats too much. Basically, it can make them feel sick or mess with their digestion.
I give my dog small pieces of cooked, unseasoned broccoli sometimes. No issues so far, and I heard it’s got vitamin C and fiber, which is good for them.

Wait, does vitamin C really help dogs? I thought they made their own?
@Nyle
Yeah, they do, but extra vitamin C can still be good, like helping with inflammation and slowing aging in older dogs.
Just don’t give them raw broccoli in big chunks. It can be a choking hazard, especially for small dogs.

Good to know. So it’s better to cook it first?

Yeah, boiling it a bit makes it softer and easier to eat. But no seasonings! Stuff like salt, garlic, or onion is toxic for dogs.
Tried giving my dog some, but he wasn’t into it lol. If your pup doesn’t like it, there are other veggies that might work better.

Yeah, some dogs just don’t like veggies. Have you tried carrots or green beans?
@Noor
Carrots, yes! He loves those. Haven’t tried green beans tho, maybe I should.
Just don’t replace their actual dog food with broccoli or any human food. They need balanced dog food to stay healthy.

Makes sense. I was just thinking of it as an occasional treat.
@Cai
That’s totally fine! As long as it’s just a small part of their diet, it shouldn’t be a problem.
