Can dogs eat cherries or is it risky?

I was about to give my dog a cherry, but then I read that the pit, stem, and leaves are toxic. Like, cyanide toxic. Now I’m kinda freaking out… is it safe if I just give them the flesh? Or should I just avoid it altogether?

Yeah, the flesh itself isn’t toxic, but honestly, it’s more trouble than it’s worth. One mistake, and they could swallow the pit, which can cause poisoning or even a blockage.

Ugh, that’s what I was afraid of. I guess safer fruits are the way to go. Any good alternatives?

@Darian
Try blueberries or pineapple! They have similar health benefits and zero risk of cyanide poisoning.

Wait, what’s the danger with the pit? Just a choking thing?

Nah, it’s worse than that. Cherry pits have cyanide, and even a small amount can be dangerous for dogs, especially small breeds.

Oh wow, I had no idea. So even one pit could be bad?

Yep. Plus, pits can get stuck in their intestines. Safer to just avoid cherries altogether.

My dog once ate a cherry off the ground. I panicked, but luckily it was just the flesh. Still, I kept an eye on him just in case.

What if my dog ate a whole bowl of cherries? :flushed:

That’s an emergency. You need to get to a vet immediately, especially if they ate the pits.

Dang, didn’t think cherries were that dangerous…

Honestly, just stick to dog-safe fruits. No stress, no risk. Blueberries, bananas, or even cantaloupe work great.
