So I was wondering, is honey actually safe for dogs? I’ve heard mixed things, some say it’s good for them, others say it’s too much sugar. My dog loves sweet stuff, so IDK if I should be giving him a little honey or not. Any dog owners here who have tried it?
Yeah, dogs can have honey, but only in small amounts. It has antioxidants and vitamins, but it’s high in sugar, so gotta be careful.

How much is ‘small amounts’? Like, can I give my big dog a whole spoonful?
@Rowan
Depends on the dog’s size! If your dog is over 90 lbs, 1 tablespoon is okay. Smaller dogs should get way less.
@Rowan
Gotcha, mine’s around 50 lbs, so probably just a teaspoon then?
Manuka honey is supposed to be good for wound healing too. Some people use it for sore throats in dogs, but I think more research is needed.

Wait, does that mean all honey works the same or just Manuka?
@Phoenix
Manuka honey has antimicrobial properties, so it’s a little different. But all honey has some benefits, just gotta use it in moderation.
Be careful with raw honey if you have a puppy or a dog with a weak immune system. It can have botulism spores, which isn’t safe for them.

Whoa, didn’t know that. So store-bought processed honey is better?
@Jesse
Not necessarily better, but at least it won’t have the risk of botulism spores. Just depends on your dog’s health.
If your dog is diabetic or overweight, avoid honey. Too much sugar isn’t great for them.

Yeah, I used to give my dog honey sometimes, but he started gaining weight. Now I just stick to lower-calorie treats.
Best way to give honey? I’ve heard of people freezing it in a Kong toy with peanut butter. Sounds fun for the dog.

That actually sounds like a genius idea. I usually just mix a little honey into my dog’s food, but I might try that!
