I was snacking on some nuts earlier and my dog was giving me the ‘I want some’ look. I know some nuts aren’t great for dogs, but which ones are actually safe? Also, are there any that are super dangerous?
Yeah, some nuts are fine, but others can be really bad. Macadamia nuts are super toxic for dogs, so definitely avoid those.

Wait, really? What happens if a dog eats macadamia nuts?
@Whit
They can get vomiting, muscle weakness, and diarrhea. Even a small amount can mess them up.
Peanuts (without the shell) and cashews are safe in small amounts. But don’t give them salted or flavored ones.

Oh, so peanut butter is fine then?

Yeah, just make sure it doesn’t have xylitol. That stuff is super toxic to dogs.
Almonds and walnuts aren’t good for dogs either. They can be choking hazards and cause stomach issues.

Dang, I thought walnuts were okay. Why are they bad?

They can grow toxic mold, plus black walnuts have a toxin called juglone that can make dogs really sick.
Also, Brazil nuts are too high in fat. Not toxic, but they can cause pancreatitis if dogs eat too many.

Pancreatitis? What’s that?

It’s inflammation of the pancreas. Super painful for dogs and can be serious.
Best to keep nuts as an occasional treat. Too much fat can cause weight gain and other health problems.

Noted! I’ll keep it to a minimum. Thanks, everyone.
