So I was wondering… are sweet potatoes safe for dogs? I’ve seen them in a lot of grain-free dog foods, but I wasn’t sure if they’re actually good for them. Do they have any health benefits, or should I avoid giving them to my pup?
Yeah, they’re safe! Sweet potatoes have fiber and vitamins, but they should be cooked first. Raw ones are harder to digest.

Wait, why can’t dogs eat them raw?

Raw sweet potatoes are tough on digestion and can even block the GI tract. Cooking makes them easier to digest!
Sweet potatoes are great for dogs in moderation. They provide energy and help with digestion, but don’t give too much because of the sugar.

How much is too much tho?

Depends on the dog! A few ounces per serving is fine. More active dogs can handle more, but lazy pups don’t need as much.
Avoid the vines tho! They’re toxic and can mess with a dog’s liver and heart. If your dog eats them, call the vet ASAP.
I give my dog mashed sweet potatoes sometimes! Just make sure they’re plain—no spices, butter, or sugar.

Good point! Some seasonings can be toxic to dogs, so keep it simple.
Sweet potatoes help with gut health too! Lots of fiber, so they make poops more regular. Just don’t overdo it or it can cause issues.

What kind of issues?

Too much sugar can cause bad gut bacteria and yeast overgrowth. If your dog starts itching a lot or gets chronic ear infections, it might be too much sugar in their diet.
