So, my ex-girlfriend asked me to take care of her cat back in April while she was looking for a new apartment after we broke up. I agreed, and the cat has been staying at my place ever since. It’s almost January now, and I’ve been feeding, taking care of, and even paying for her vet visits. The cat is registered under her name at the vet, but the vet said that she’d need to sign over ownership to me for me to have full access to the records. I don’t think she’s going to do it, though. The problem is, she hasn’t visited the cat once since she moved out, and I’ve noticed she’s been traveling a lot. It’s really frustrating. I haven’t asked her if I can keep the cat yet because I’m worried it might cause problems. Is there any legal way I can make the cat officially mine? I’ve developed a strong bond with the cat, and we’ve been living together for almost two years now, with the last six months being just the two of us. I really don’t want to lose her. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Get copies of all the vet bills and anything you’ve bought for the cat. She’s pretty much abandoned it at this point.
Honestly, I’d just not give her the cat back if she asks. But I think you’re assuming she’ll ask. If she wants it back, let her take you to court. You’ve had the cat for over 6 months, and she hasn’t even contacted the cat or helped with any expenses. I really doubt any judge would rule in her favor.
As for the vet records, just start with a new vet and go off the info you do have. You’ll be able to handle the vaccinations at least.
@Eli
I’ve kept every receipt for anything I’ve bought for her, so if I tell her I’m not giving the cat back, do you think I could make a strong case?
@Eli
You could always take it to court to get things sorted.
How long did she have the cat before you met her?
Tough situation! Personally, I’d just forge her signature, but that’s just me.

Don’t do that. It could get you into serious trouble.
