Can you have two pet insurance policies at the same time in Canada?

Can I have two pet insurance plans at the same time in Canada?

Hi everyone I need some advice on getting pet insurance for my 5-year-old mini poodle. She had a complete check-up before moving to Canada, and everything looked good. I want the best coverage possible because I’d do anything to help her.

I was considering Trupanion and Fetch, but I started to wonder if I could sign up for both: Trupanion with a high deductible for serious issues and Fetch with a low deductible for vet visits and minor accidents. Is this allowed in Vancouver BC? Just to clarify, I’m not trying to submit the same bill to both; I want to claim different conditions from different companies. Has anyone done this, and is it worth the cost or am I overlooking something?

If I have to choose just one, should I go with Trupanion at a low deductible or the high deductible and save what I’d spend on Fetch? I’m a first-time dog parent so I’d really appreciate any insights TIA

Here are the quotes I received:

Fetch:

  • $129 per month
  • Maximum Annual Payout: $15,000
  • Annual Deductible: $300
  • Reimbursement Rate: 90%

Trupanion:

  • $141 per month
  • Annual Payout: Unlimited
  • Deductible per condition: $1,000
  • Reimbursement Rate: 90%

If I consider Trupanion for just one insurance plan:

  • $313 per month
  • Annual Payout: Unlimited
  • Deductible per condition: $300
  • Reimbursement Rate: 90%

I just spoke with someone else in Canada about having double coverage and it turns out that some insurance companies do allow it here.

In the US, most policies don’t let us do this, so I can’t give you much advice unfortunately. But it sounds like it might be a lot to manage like keeping the two policies separate and knowing when to use each one.

Are we really not allowed? I had no idea

Thanks for the info man
