Hey everyone, I’m wondering if it’s possible to have two insurance providers for my dog? We’re torn between Furkin and Spot, and I’m considering getting both so they can cover different accidents. Anyone here have experience with this? Could use some advice.
Interesting question. I hope someone knows for sure. I always assumed they shared info. We actually switched from Trupanion to Furkin to save some money, and later found out Furkin is owned by Trupanion too. They set it up as a cheaper option. They know everything!
I’ve thought about this before too. The problem is, some insurance companies won’t pay out if your pet is already covered by another insurer. You’d have to dig through the whole contract, but the catch is, you usually don’t get the full contract until you sign up . I do know you can’t make the same claim with both insurers, but filing separate claims on each? That’s a grey area, and it depends on the company. I feel like they don’t want you to do this, so they make it hard to figure out. I’ve considered trying it myself but didn’t want to risk losing coverage or getting canceled.
Yeah, I didn’t even think about insurers sharing info with each other. That’s definitely something to worry about. Appreciate you sharing that though!
I’m not entirely sure they do share info, but with all the data platforms like LexisNexis, it’s possible. It might not be a huge deal to them, but that doesn’t mean they won’t find out. And there’s always the risk of it being considered insurance fraud, which is a whole other problem . I’ll look through my Trupanion policy later and update you if I find anything about double coverage because now I’m curious too!
I found this in the Furkin policy:
“If you have insurance on the pet elsewhere, our policy will be considered excess insurance. We won’t make payments for claims covered by the other insurance, except for any amount that goes beyond what the other insurance pays or what we’re required to contribute by law.”
Ah, I missed your reply earlier! My Trupanion policy says almost the same thing. When I filed a recent claim, they even asked if my pet had other insurance. So yeah, getting a second policy is off the table for me. Too bad!
