I’ve been wondering if Shih Tzus shed much. I’ve heard they’re low-shedding, but I’m not really sure. I know they have that long silky coat, but does it really stay that way, or is it one of those breeds where you find fur everywhere? Anyone with a Shih Tzu know the deal?
Yeah, Shih Tzus don’t shed too much, but they do shed a bit when they get older. Their hair is like, more like ours than fur, so it’s not as bad as other dogs. But you’ll still see some shedding when you brush or bathe them. I’ve got one, and I’ve noticed it more as she’s aged!

Oh, cool, that’s good to know! My friend’s dog sheds like crazy, so I was a bit worried about that.
Shih Tzu pups don’t shed at all when they’re young! It’s when they get around 9-12 months that the shedding kicks in. That’s when they go through the whole transition phase.

Oh, so it’s only when they’re about to be adults? That explains a lot.
Mine sheds a lot in the warmer months because of the double coat. She has that thick undercoat that helps her stay cool, but it means shedding during summer.

Yeah, I heard about the shedding with the seasons! I guess it’s just part of the deal with double-coated breeds, huh?
Also, if your Shih Tzu is pregnant, expect some excessive shedding. It’s totally hormonal. My girl shed a lot during her last pregnancy!

Oh wow, that’s something I didn’t know! Good to keep in mind if I ever plan on breeding mine.
Aside from the usual shedding, make sure you’re feeding them a good diet. Bad food can cause more shedding than normal. I give my Shih Tzu beef, chicken, and fish, and she’s got a shiny coat.

I thought diet would affect their coat, but I didn’t realize it would cause shedding! I’ll check her food.
