I was reading about cherry eye surgery for dogs, and it seems like pet insurance can help cover it, but not always. The surgery can be pretty expensive, from $300 to $2000 depending on the situation. Apparently, cherry eye is when a dog’s third eyelid pops out, and it’s common in certain breeds. Does anyone here have any experience with this? Does your pet insurance cover this kind of surgery?
Oh wow, I didn’t know pet insurance could cover this! I had a dog with cherry eye, and we just dealt with it. Guess I should’ve looked into insurance more seriously.

Yeah, I found out my plan covers it, but only if it’s not a pre-existing condition. So it’s important to make sure the waiting period has passed!
@Ren
Oh, that’s good to know! What do you mean by ‘pre-existing condition’ though? I’ve never really understood that part.
I had to pay out of pocket for my dog’s cherry eye surgery a few years ago. It was a hassle but totally worth it to get him fixed up. Not sure if insurance would have helped in my case though.

Yeah, I think it depends on the insurance plan you have. Some will cover certain things, others won’t. A bit confusing, honestly.

I have a French Bulldog, and he’s had cherry eye twice now. The first time we managed with meds, but the second time, we went for surgery. It was pretty expensive, but insurance covered most of it.
What breed is your dog? I think smaller breeds are more prone to it, right?
Is cherry eye something that always needs surgery? I heard it can go away on its own sometimes…

Yeah, usually it can clear up after a few weeks. But if it doesn’t, surgery is the only way to treat it. Gotta get the gland back in place.
I wonder if the costs vary by location too? I’ve heard it’s way more expensive in big cities.

Definitely! I got quoted twice the price in a city clinic compared to a suburban one. It’s crazy how much the location affects the cost.
