Hey everyone, I was wondering if pet insurance helps with the cost of insulin for pets? I have a dog with diabetes, and the vet says insulin is needed regularly. My insurance has a waiting period, but I’m not sure if insulin is covered. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Yeah, pet insurance can cover insulin, but there are a few things to check. The pet needs to be insured without diabetes as a pre-existing condition, and the waiting period should be over before the symptoms show up. Make sure you’re on an accident and illness plan, not just accident-only, since insulin is for illness.
@Vic
I didn’t know it depends on the waiting period… makes sense now! My dog was diagnosed after the policy started, so I guess I’m covered.
@Vic
Yeah, that’s right. I also found out my plan covers insulin under the illness part, so I get about 90% covered for meds, follow-up vet visits, and even prescription diets. It’s a lifesaver!

I wish my plan did that, haha. I guess it’s time to look at the fine print again… I’ll check with my insurer.
Definitely check the specifics with your insurer! Spot pet insurance, for example, covers things like insulin if your plan includes illness treatment, and they even offer up to 90% coverage on meds and follow-ups. It’s super helpful if your pet needs ongoing care.
@Parrish
Oh, I didn’t know about Spot. I’ll look into it. How long have you been with them?
@Parrish
I’ve been with them for a year now, and honestly, it’s been a solid experience so far. I feel a lot more at ease knowing that the major expenses are covered.
Just FYI, insulin for pets can get pretty pricey. I’m paying around $100 a month for my dog’s insulin. Add vet visits and tests, and it can add up quickly, but pet insurance has definitely helped ease the cost.
@Timber
Yeah, same here. I’ve been spending quite a bit, and having insurance makes it so much easier. Anyone know if it covers the blood tests too?

It depends on the plan, but some do cover things like bloodwork and other diagnostics as long as it’s part of treating the covered condition. Worth checking with your insurer to confirm!
I didn’t realize that diabetes in pets was so common… I’ve got a cat, and he’s been struggling with insulin needs. It’s been tough, but luckily the insurance helps with some of the costs. Just wish it covered all of it, though.
@Addison
I hear you. The costs really add up over time. I guess as long as the major expenses are covered, it’s a bit of a relief.
To add on, insulin for diabetic pets is super important to keep their blood sugar in check. If your pet gets diagnosed, definitely talk to your vet about insulin options. It can prevent a lot of health issues down the road.
@Parker
Thanks for that tip! I’ll make sure to ask about the best insulin treatment when I take my dog back for his check-up.
