Ex took my cat when we broke up, need some help.!

Hey everyone, I need some advice. My ex-girlfriend and I broke up recently while I was out of town. She took all her things and also took my cat with her. Legally, I read that pets are considered property here in Nevada, so I know she can’t just take him like that.

I’ve got him microchipped and all the adoption paperwork is under my name. The problem is, she’s put a temporary protection order (TPO) on me that lasts a week, so I can’t go near her right now. She’s also moved in with her mom, about 45 minutes away in another county.

What’s the best way to go about this? Do I contact my local authorities or the ones in her county? If I need to go in person, can my parents go since they live closer to her? I just want to get my cat back without breaking the TPO. Any advice would be appreciated!

I’d say try contacting both your local authorities and the ones in her county since it’s a property issue and she’s still in Nevada. You’ll definitely need to show proof like the microchip and paperwork. If the TPO prevents you from going there yourself, maybe your parents could help out by going with the police to check on your cat’s wellbeing.

Also, if she took him without cause and his condition isn’t good, you might even consider looking into pressing charges or taking legal action for the stress it’s caused you. A lawyer could give you some guidance, especially if the TPO isn’t based on the truth.
