I’ve been thinking about getting pet insurance for my dog, but IDK how it really works. I’ve heard it helps cover unexpected vet bills, but what does it actually cover? Do I need to worry about exclusions like pre-existing conditions? I’m also curious about the claims process—how does that all go down? Anyone here have experience with this?
Yeah, pet insurance can be super helpful, but they do have some exclusions like pre-existing conditions. My vet recommended a policy that covers both accidents and illnesses, but not routine stuff like vaccinations. It helps with bigger bills though!

Oh, so they don’t cover regular stuff? That’s good to know! How about the claims process, do you pay upfront and then get reimbursed?

Yeah, that’s right! You pay for your vet visits upfront, then submit the invoice to the insurance company for reimbursement. It’s a bit of a wait, but worth it for big bills.
I’ve been using Spot Pet Insurance for a while now. They make the claims process super easy. You just upload your invoice to their portal and get reimbursed in about two days. Super quick!

That sounds pretty smooth! Do they cover any wellness care or just emergencies?
@Teo
It depends on the plan. Spot has a preventive care add-on if you want to cover wellness stuff like vaccines. Otherwise, it’s just accident and illness.

Just FYI, most plans won’t cover breeding or pregnancy costs, so make sure you’re clear on that. Also, things like supplements and holistic medicine usually aren’t covered either.
Got it, thanks for the heads up! Are there other random things I should be aware of?
I’m still confused about deductibles… what’s the deal with that? Do I have to pay that first before the insurance kicks in?

Yep, exactly! You pay the deductible first, and then the insurance will reimburse you for the rest of the vet bill. The amount depends on the plan you choose.
Just enrolled in a plan with a low deductible to keep my monthly premiums down. Hoping it works out if my dog needs a big vet bill soon!

That’s the strategy I’m leaning towards! Lower deductible sounds like it could be useful in case of emergencies.
