Hey everyone, I have a 4-year-old male cat who recently had emergency surgery for a serious blockage. He’s doing better now and should be coming home tomorrow. I’m looking into pet insurance, but I’m reading that pre-existing conditions won’t be covered. Does anyone know if there’s an insurance company that might cover potential future urinary problems since he has this issue now? Or am I just out of luck financially if this happens again? Any advice would be appreciated!
When I first got my dog, the vet pointed out that I should watch for hip dysplasia because of the way he walked. That note stuck on his chart, and no insurance company would cover hip dysplasia for his entire life, even though he lived to 14. Unfortunately, you might not be able to get insurance for your cat’s condition either.
This is exactly why people get denied coverage. Vets share too much info with insurance companies!
Honestly, I don’t blame the vet at all. He was just doing his job and looking out for my dog’s health. Back then, pet insurance wasn’t as common as it is now. But yeah, with more people insuring their pets, insurance companies are looking for any excuse to deny a claim these days. It’s frustrating, for sure.
There might be a couple of options, but you’ll need to make some calls and ask very specific questions. AKC, for example, is saying they’ll cover pre-existing conditions in certain states after 365 days of continuous coverage. The condition doesn’t need to be cured, but you’ll need to check if your cat’s diagnosis is eligible.
ASPCA, Lemonade, Embrace, and Figo also say they’ll cover pre-existing conditions if they’re cured, but it depends on the state and the condition. You should definitely call them to clarify what qualifies, and be sure to ask about any waiting periods. If your cat is on prescription food, that might mean he’s not considered cured. But give them a call to be sure.
Sorry to hear about your cat, hope he’s back to his usual self soon!
