How long can you actually leave a cat alone for?

I’m planning a short trip and was wondering how long it’s safe to leave my cat at home alone… Like, I always thought cats were super independent, but now I’m not so sure. She’s an adult and pretty chill, but IDK if I need someone to check in or not. Anyone else been through this?

Yeah, for an adult cat it’s usually fine to leave them for like 24 hours. Just make sure they’ve got enough food, water, and a clean litter box.

Exactly! They sleep like 18 hours a day anyway lol. As long as she’s comfy and has what she needs, she’ll prob be fine for a day.

@Jordan
Haha yeah that’s true, she does sleep a LOT. Thanks, this makes me feel better.

But if it’s more than 24 hours, you should def get someone to check in. Even a quick drop-by to clean the litter box and refresh water helps.

100%. Cats can get into random stuff and sometimes even get stuck… better safe than sorry.

@Hart
Yikes I hadn’t thought of that :grimacing:. I’ll ask my neighbor to swing by, just in case.

If you’ve got a kitten tho, that’s a whole different thing. You can’t leave them alone that long. Mine couldn’t go 4 hours alone at first :joy:

Wait really? What age is okay to leave them for like a full day?

@Blair
Around 6 months is okay for a regular workday, but not 24 hrs till they’re about a year old. Depends on their energy too.

FYI, you can leave stuff that smells like you—like a shirt or blanket. Helps with the whole loneliness thing.

That actually works? I might try that next time. Poor guy meows so much when I’m gone :sob:

@Zeek
Yeah it helps more than you’d think. Cats are softies deep down lol.

I got an automatic feeder and a water fountain… total lifesavers. Also got a cheap pet cam to peek in while I’m out :joy:

Omg I’ve been thinking about getting one of those cams. Which one do you use?

@Uma
Just a basic one from Amazon, but it lets me talk to her and even drop treats. Not necessary, but kinda fun!

Also if you’ve got more than one cat, look into microchip feeders. Keeps them from stealing each other’s food lol.
