How long is the waiting period for curable pre-existing conditions in pet insurance?

How long is the wait period for curable pre-existing conditions in pet insurance? I switched my pet insurance from Embrace to Lemonade in May because my premium jumped from $500 to $900 with Embrace, so I figured it was time for a change. Anyway, I didn’t pay enough attention to curable pre-existing conditions at the time. Lemonade has a 12-month waiting period for those.

This month, in August 2024, I filed a claim for my dog’s ear infection, but it got denied because my dog was treated for an ear infection back in October 2023. I get it. But now, I’m wondering if I messed up by filing the claim. Does this mean the clock resets, and they won’t cover ear infections for another 12 months (so, until August 2025), instead of starting in October 2024? They just gave me some typical insurance policy explanation, but I’m still confused. Any thoughts on this? Appreciate any advice .

Yeah, you messed up. Your dog hasn’t been clear of the infection for a full year yet. You need 12 months without any infection before they can consider it curable. Since you submitted the claim before that, the clock resets now.

That’s what I thought. It’s my first time dealing with pet insurance, especially after switching. Luckily, ear infections aren’t a frequent issue for my dog… though I probably just jinxed myself saying that. Thanks for the clarification

If ear infections are the only thing being excluded, I’d make sure your vet notes in their SOAP records that the infection isn’t related to any allergies. That way, only the ear infections will be excluded and nothing else.

Totally agree with Unclewaffl3s. Make sure the vet’s notes are super clear that the infection is not linked to any other condition. If there are other symptoms like scratching or licking, they need to state that these are solely due to the infection. If they don’t, insurance companies might try to say it’s related to something else and deny future claims.
