Is Embrace Pet Insurance Worth It?

Is Embrace worth it? I just signed up for Embrace for my younger dog and cat last week, but I’m worried about what they consider pre-existing conditions. I went for the accident and illness plan only, with no prescription or wellness coverage.

My cat has allergies, urinary crystals, and dental issues, so I know those won’t be covered. I mainly got it for other potential health problems like cancer and diabetes. If she develops kidney disease later, would they classify that as pre-existing because of her urinary issues? She’s only 2, so it’s not an immediate concern, but my last cat had kidney disease and cancer and lived to 19, so I’m just curious.

My younger dog, who’s almost 2, was limping, and after X-rays, they ruled out hip dysplasia and luxating patella. They said she might have growing pains or a muscle sprain. Does that mean any future orthopedic issues will be unclaimable? I’m unsure how strict they are with that. I got the insurance in case she breaks a leg or tears an ACL since she’s very active and will be doing sports soon. I just don’t want to be caught off guard if that happens.

Overall, is the accident and illness plan worth it for serious injuries and illnesses? I recently spent $7,000 out of pocket for my other dog’s hip replacement, so any reimbursement in the future would be helpful.

I can’t really help you there since I’m in the same situation with my dogs. I was thinking about signing up for insurance too. AKC covers pre-existing conditions after a year, but they just got rid of their unlimited plan. I was considering Embrace as well. Just wanted to boost this conversation for you. Good luck

How long have you been with AKC? We’re getting a new puppy on Thursday, and I’m looking into them as an option

Quite sometime, about 6months now

Wow, I’m learning so much today. I’m taking notes about AKC. It’s interesting how they categorize curable and non-curable issues

I think it’s best to just call and ask them directly about pre-existing conditions. From what I’ve seen, it seems pretty likely that the insurance would consider any kidney issues for the cat and orthopedic concerns for the dog as pre-existing. I believe Embrace has an orthopedic exam and waiver process, so I’d definitely ask about that. The worst they can say is no, and then you’ll know for sure

As for whether it’s worth it, that’s tough to say. It really depends on your budget and how much you’re willing to spend, along with your tolerance for risk and the chances of injury or sickness. Since your dog will be involved in sports, it might be good to consider the likelihood of non-orthopedic injuries

Just a heads-up about Embrace. They’re known for raising their premiums significantly. I started at $35, but I eventually canceled after they kept increasing the cost every year. By 2021, it almost doubled to $207, and I hadn’t even made a claim
