Is it okay to throw dog poop bags in neighborhood bins on walks?

Don’t use my can for your dog poop. End of story. Take it home with you.

Adding garbage to garbage—how is that rude?

It’s actually illegal.

@Avery
If that’s a joke, it’s clever. If not, how is tossing garbage in a bin illegal?

If it’s not your bin, it counts as illegal dumping.

Source? Are bins really considered private? I thought they were managed by the waste company.

@Ira
Even if waste companies provide bins, homeowners are responsible for them. Using someone else’s bin without permission can result in fines. Some places don’t even provide bins, and residents have to buy their own.

@Ira
That’s how it is here, too. We rent bins from waste services, but I’d rather people toss poop bags there than leave it on my lawn.

People have a right to their own preferences, and even in scented bags, dog poop smells. Not everyone’s nose adjusts to it.

I only put our bin out when it’s full, and it can sometimes take a couple of weeks. I don’t want someone’s poop bag in there for that long.

No way. I respect other people’s property. I’ll carry the bag to a public trash can or home, and I only toss it in my own bin on trash day.

Is an apartment complex dumpster a public can? My dog has a favorite spot near it, but I’m not sure if I should use it.

@Avery
I live in an apartment, and I’d say yes.

@Avery
Technically, the complex pays for the dumpster. But I doubt anyone would mind as long as you’re just tossing poop bags.

Thanks, better safe than sorry!

@Avery
I manage properties, and yes, you can put dog poop bags in the dumpster.

I’d be annoyed if someone put dog poop in my bin, especially if it’s missed by the garbage collector and left behind. I carry my dog’s waste back to my own can.

Totally fair, I’ve never actually done it myself. Sometimes I think about it when I see the bins all lined up at night.

@Keir
Sanitation workers don’t always pick up every single thing, so small bags like that can get left behind.

Only if the homeowner explicitly says, ‘It’s okay to toss it in.’ Otherwise, I’ll just carry it until I get home.
