My dog seems to have a slipped disc, and within 12 hours, he has become almost completely paralyzed in his back half. We were referred to two different clinics, and both quoted us around 10k-13k for both surgery and an MRI.
We just can’t afford this, but I don’t want to put my dog down. Care credit might be an option, but we can’t handle payments over 1k a month for the next year. Pet insurance won’t cover this since it’s a pre-existing condition, and we’re just above the limit for financial help from non-profits. We don’t have anyone we can ask for that much money. What can I do to help him?
Paralyzed dogs can still live with medical management like assistive devices, anti-inflammatory drugs, and a lot of physical care. Is your dog’s quality of life still okay? And would your quality of life be alright with him in this condition? This is a personal decision. My dad was a vet and always worked with farmers who couldn’t afford much for cattle. Dog owners often spent a lot to keep their pets alive, but my dad was okay with either choice: paying for treatment or putting the animal down.
