My parents decided to give away the family dog, and I’m heartbroken. My dog bit my cousin, and now my parents think it’s best to rehome him. I’m just sitting here crying in my room, not sure what to do. I don’t want him to go. I’d really appreciate any support right now.
I’ve seen some comments talking about euthanasia… let’s not jump to that without knowing more. We don’t even know why the dog bit or if it was serious. I’m really sorry you’re losing your dog.

Exactly. Maybe the cousin was bothering the dog in some way? Dogs don’t just bite for no reason.
@Hollis
There can be many reasons a dog bites. They usually give a warning, like a growl. It’s like if I say, ‘If you poke me again, I’ll react,’ and then someone is surprised when I do.

One time, I did that too… I bit my boyfriend’s arm as a joke because he kept teasing me. It’s a natural reaction!

My cousin once stared down my small dog unintentionally, and my dog gave a warning nip. He didn’t break skin, but it was enough to say, ‘Hey, back off!’ Sometimes dogs just get overwhelmed.
How bad was the bite, and do you know what caused it?
I’m so sorry. Sending you strength and hugs.
This situation is really sad. I wish there was something I could do to help.
If you’re young, maybe talk to an adult you trust, like a family friend. Also, if it’s not too late, maybe reach out to a local animal rescue? Sometimes they can step in and help rehome pets in a safe way.
My parents ended up just letting him out on the street. I didn’t even get to say goodbye…

Wait, they just left him out there alone? I thought they were rehoming him, not just abandoning him!

They put him outside on the street by himself? That’s so cruel… I’m really sorry.

This must be so painful for you, and I’m sorry that this happened. It’s normal to feel really sad about losing a pet. I hope you find some comfort soon.

Consider calling local animal services or a rescue. They can help a pet in need, especially if it’s been left out like that.

That’s just so cruel. Poor dog, and poor you. This is heartbreaking.

I’m so sorry. This wasn’t the right thing to do at all.
This whole situation is rough, and I’m sorry you’re dealing with it.
Here are a couple of questions for you:
- Who legally owns the dog? (Is there any paperwork with your name on it?)
- Do you have a place where you could keep the dog if you were allowed to?
- Have you discussed options with your parents, like finding training to help with his behavior?
@Hal
I think the person who posted this might be a minor. They recently said the dog was abandoned, which makes this all even sadder.
Just hoping someone kind finds the dog and takes him in.

You’re probably right… It’s just such a sad choice for the dog, who might now be in harm’s way.
If they abandoned a dog like that, animal control or the police should be notified. It’s not just heartbreaking—it could lead to serious trouble.
