What do you think about Figo pet insurance? I recently adopted a 1.5-year-old cat from a rescue cafe back in March, and while I wasn’t sure about getting insurance at first, I think it’s a smart move now. He seems perfectly healthy but has a bit of anxiety, probably because he’s still adjusting to his new home. I want to be ready if he ever needs any treatment or medication.
I’m leaning towards Figo since I’m a student on a tight budget and their basic plan is really affordable. I live in California, where pet insurance tends to be pricey. Figo offers a “value plus” plan for around $20 a month that covers 70% of approved vet costs up to $10,000 per year after a $500 deductible. They also have options for wellness coverage for routine care and vaccinations. For now, I’m thinking of just getting the base plan without add-ons and possibly upgrading later when my budget allows. I need to take him in for vaccinations in September.
Does this sound like a good plan? I’d love any advice, especially since I’m a first-time pet owner.
I worked at Figo a couple of years ago and overall, they’re a solid insurance provider as long as you pay attention to the exclusions. I switched to Nationwide mainly because Figo kept trying to get approval to raise their rates but kept getting denied. I had a better experience with Nationwide for my previous dog, but honestly, I wouldn’t recommend them now after they dropped a ton of plans. The key when looking for pet insurance is to read the policy document carefully, make sure to check out the exclusions. You might also want to consider Trupanion, Lemonade, ASPCA, or AKC.
We just submitted our first claim with Figo, but despite my vet saying it was necessary and me paying for the exam power-up, it got denied. I’m already feeling drained by this process and it’s only our first claim.
Was it a pre-existing condition or something not covered in the policy? Dealing with insurance can be such a hassle. I’ve had good luck with payouts from Nationwide, but I haven’t worked at Figo for 4 or 5 years, so I’m not sure how they’re handling things now.
Nope, there are no pre-existing conditions. The claim was for bloodwork to get a diagnosis, and we added the exam power-up, which should cover those kinds of visits. It’s just so frustrating because I’ve spent weeks gathering more paperwork, and then they just denied it.
That’s really frustrating! If the invoice shows it as wellness bloodwork, they might deny it, but I’m not sure if that’s what happened. I always remind my vet to avoid labeling anything as wellness. If Nationwide hadn’t dropped so many plans, I would recommend them without hesitation.
It doesn’t say wellness; the bloodwork is labeled as CBC. It does mention the exam as an annual visit, but I assumed that wouldn’t be covered. Each item is listed separately, not just as a broad annual visit. It’s still so annoying. I’ve heard good things about Nationwide, but switching isn’t really an option for us right now since our dog is 7, and the monthly rates are crazy.
