What are the reviews for MetLife pet insurance for two dogs in California?

What are people’s experiences with MetLife pet insurance for two dogs in California?

Hi everyone, I’m new to pet insurance and want to be sure I’m making the right choice. MetLife offers coverage for my two dogs at $78.43/month, which includes things like monthly preventative meds, vaccines, teeth cleanings, and wellness exams. I’ve read what’s covered, but I want to confirm I’m understanding it correctly and that there’s no hidden catch.

So, for about $78/month, will I be reimbursed up to 80% for these treatments? The deductible is $250, so once I hit that amount, they’ll cover 80% of the listed items for both pets?

Any insights or experiences with MetLife pet insurance would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

This is a good overview of MetLife insurance, but it really depends on the underwriter. In California, MetGen is the current underwriter, known for being more generous and covering wellness claims at the reimbursement rate you selected (80%).

However, if your policy is underwritten by IAIC, the reimbursement works differently. They use a benefits schedule, which sets limits on how much you can spend in each category rather than reimbursing a percentage.

With MetGen, you should be able to get reimbursed up to 80% for vaccines, wellness visits, and dental cleanings. The main concern is how long this arrangement will last. Companies often consolidate underwriters, so MetLife might change its underwriting strategy in the future.

For instance, Nationwide recently discontinued a generous wellness plan for many pets due to financial issues. MetLife’s smaller market share might mean less flexibility, which is something to consider.

Additionally, MetLife has a reputation for slow claims processing and paperwork issues. If you don’t mind handling documentation and follow-ups, this might not be a major concern for you.

Lastly, this plan seems to be a family plan where deductibles and annual limits are shared. With a $2,000 annual limit for both dogs combined, it could be used up quickly, especially with high vet costs. You might want to consider increasing the limit to better cover accidents or surgeries, which can be financially burdensome.

I hope this helps clarify things.

I have MetLife through my job and I really like them. The costs are very reasonable, and I appreciate that they have a single deductible for the whole family. So, for my two dogs, I only have to pay a $250 deductible and receive 90% reimbursement.

Yes, MetLife’s family deductible feature is a great aspect that makes it work more like traditional health insurance. It’s nice when companies offer pet insurance as a benefit, and I’m curious to see if this becomes more common in the future.
