What’s the annual cost of owning a dog?

So, I’ve been thinking about getting a dog, and I’m trying to figure out how much it’ll cost me in the long run. I know there are one-time expenses like adoption fees and supplies, but I’m more concerned about the yearly costs. From food to vet visits, grooming, and those unexpected costs that can pop up… how much should I be prepared to spend annually? Anyone here have some experience with this? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Honestly, owning a dog isn’t as cheap as I thought. Between food, vet visits, and grooming, I’m spending around $4,000 a year. It’s a lot, but totally worth it for my pup.

Wow, $4,000?! What do you spend most on? I was thinking it might be the vet visits, but not sure what else adds up.

@Blayne
Yeah, the vet visits are a big chunk, but grooming can also add up fast. Especially if you have a high-maintenance breed, like mine. Food costs can be anywhere from $120 to $900 a year, depending on size and brand.

I didn’t realize how much I’d need to budget for unexpected costs like replacing furniture or extra vet bills. One time, my dog broke his leg, and that set me back around $2,000. :grimacing:

Oof, that’s rough! Did you have pet insurance? I’ve been thinking about getting one, but IDK if it’s worth it.

@Marley
Yeah, I wish I’d had insurance at the time. Now I’m covered, and it helps with things like accidents or illnesses. Definitely something to look into before you get a dog!

I adopted my dog a few years ago, and I spent maybe $200 on her adoption and first supplies. But then the yearly costs add up with things like food, grooming, and vet care. It’s a lot more manageable if you plan for it in advance.

@Patton
Yeah, I was worried about the long-term costs too. I’m budgeting for about $3,000 to $4,000 a year, but I guess it really depends on the breed and health needs. My dog’s pretty low maintenance so far.

I didn’t think about the extra stuff like buying new shoes or replacing chewed-up furniture! I’ve had to buy new dog beds more than once. :sweat_smile:

Same! My dog’s teeth are like little saw blades. I’ve had to replace a few things too. :joy: It’s all part of the deal though.

I’ve been reading about the potential costs of end-of-life services, and wow, I wasn’t expecting that. It’s something I’ll need to plan for as my dog ages.

Yeah, the end-of-life costs can be a lot. It’s definitely not something you think about right away, but it’s good to be prepared for those kinds of expenses. :pensive:
