What should first-time pet owners know about insuring a neutered cat?

Hey everyone, I’m a college student and just got a 5-month-old male tabby who’s healthy and fully vaccinated. I’ve been checking out different insurance options like Lemonade, Trupanion, MetLife, and Nationwide, but they all seem really pricey. Most of them are over $50 a month for decent coverage, which includes regular vet exams and vaccines. I thought people usually paid around $30 a month for pet insurance. What am I missing here? Do people just get the basic plan? What should I do?

Well, it depends on where you live and the type of pet you have. I’ve got a 10-week-old French bulldog and I’m using MetLife, which costs me about $108 a month. But yeah, if you’re looking for 90% reimbursement, that’ll drive up the price. Maybe consider looking at 70% or 80% reimbursement instead. My sister has Spot insurance for her cat, and she’s super happy with it. It only costs her around $25 a month, and she gets 70% back on claims. She’s used it quite a bit already.

Yeah, I’ve heard French bulldogs especially tend to cost more when it comes to insurance. Also, adding wellness coverage and things like exam fees and vaccines can bump up the price. If you’re on a budget, you might want to just get a basic accident and illness policy. Or if you’re like me, you want everything but don’t want to pay more than $35 a month, which… unfortunately, isn’t really a thing.

I actually ended up going with Prudent Pet. It’s costing me $40 a month for $10k coverage, with a $250 deductible, 90% reimbursement, and it includes vet visits and decent coverage for routine care.
