So I’ve been wondering, do dogs actually eat poinsettias? I know they’re super popular during the holidays, but I’ve also heard they’re poisonous. Like, how bad is it if my dog nibbles on one? Would love some advice from pet owners here!
Yeah, dogs might go for them because of the bright colors, but they’re only mildly poisonous. My dog chewed on one once, and he just drooled a bit and had an upset stomach. Nothing major, but still stressful!
@Hux
Mildly poisonous? What does that even mean? Should I be worried if my dog takes a bite?

Basically, it can cause drooling, vomiting, and maybe some skin irritation if they touch the sap. But it’s not deadly. Just rinse their mouth and watch them closely!
Poinsettias are pretty bitter-smelling too, so some dogs avoid them entirely. Mine sniffed it and walked away lol.
@Bo
Haha, I don’t have a trick tbh, just luck. But maybe try putting plants out of reach? Or get dog-safe plants instead.
FYI, it’s not just poinsettias. Other Christmas plants like mistletoe, holly, and ivy are also poisonous for dogs. Anyone else had issues with these?

Oh wow, I didn’t know about holly and mistletoe! What happens if they eat those?
@Blaine
Similar symptoms—vomiting, diarrhea, etc. Mistletoe can sometimes cause more serious issues like low heart rate though, so better to keep it all out of reach!
Anyone know if lilies are bad for dogs? I’ve heard they’re really dangerous for cats but IDK about dogs.

Yeah, lilies are poisonous to dogs too, though not as bad as for cats. They can still cause vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. Better safe than sorry!
@Kim
Good to know, thanks! I’ll make sure to keep them far away. Didn’t realize they were risky for dogs too.
For anyone who’s worried, just monitor your dog if they eat a poinsettia. Most of the time, rinsing their mouth and keeping an eye on them is enough. But if things get worse, call your vet ASAP!

Yep, agreed! A quick rinse and keeping them away from the plant usually does the trick.
