Do Schnauzers Shed much, anyone know?

So, I’ve been looking into Schnauzers and heard they don’t shed much. I was surprised cause with those beards, you’d think there’d be fur everywhere! But apparently, they’re not too bad when it comes to shedding. Anyone else have a Schnauzer? How much do they actually shed? Also, are they hypoallergenic? I’m curious cause I’m considering adopting one!

Yeah, Schnauzers don’t shed much at all! They have this cool double coat that keeps things pretty tidy. I’ve had one for a few years and it’s hardly ever a hassle with fur all over the place. As for hypoallergenic, they aren’t totally hypoallergenic but they do shed less dander than most dogs. So yeah, they’re better for people with allergies.

@Ash
Wait, what’s dander? Does that mean they’re still safe for people with allergies? I’m trying to figure out if it’s worth getting one.

Dander is like the tiny bits of skin and saliva that cause allergies. So while no dog is 100% hypoallergenic, Schnauzers shed so little dander that they’re usually much better for people who are allergic to dogs. You should be okay!

I’ve had a Mini Schnauzer for a few years. Same deal, barely sheds. I’d definitely recommend them if you’re allergic to dog fur. The only downside is they need a lot of grooming. It’s a hassle sometimes, but it’s worth it for the low shedding!

@Eli
How often do you have to groom them? I’m not looking to spend hours every week, lol.

It’s about once a week for brushing, but you gotta keep on top of it more when they’re pups. Once they’re grown, it’s easier. Just keep the coat from getting too knotted, and you’re good to go.

Just a heads up, Schnauzers have that wiry coat that needs to be stripped (like, pulling the hair out by hand) every so often. If you’re getting one, you might wanna check out how to do that, or just take them to a pro.

@Pierce
Oof, sounds a bit intense. Does it hurt the dog or is it just a weird process?

Yeah, it can be uncomfortable if you’re not doing it right. But done properly, it’s not painful for them. It’s actually good for their coat if done in spring and fall. Just be careful and maybe get a professional for the first time!

I think Schnauzers are perfect for people with allergies. They don’t shed much, but you still have to brush them regularly to keep their coat looking nice. If you’re okay with grooming, they’re great pets!

@Paxton
I’m so sold! Definitely gonna look into getting one. Do they need a lot of exercise?

Schnauzers are pretty active! They love walks and playtime. But they’re not as high-maintenance as some breeds, so you can definitely manage if you’re not home all day.

Anyone else have a Schnauzer with a mega coat? My buddy’s got one, and his coat is huge! It’s like a lion’s mane, but still barely sheds.

That sounds like it would take a lot of grooming, though! How often does he need to get it trimmed?

@Whit
Yeah, it’s a bit more work, but it’s so worth it. They trim it about every 2 months to keep it manageable. But his coat is so thick, it’s almost like its own little blanket.
