So, I have a dog who’s been limping lately and I think it might be a torn ligament. I’ve heard about TPLO surgery, but the cost is making me nervous. I was wondering, does anyone know if pet insurance actually covers TPLO surgery? I don’t want to get my hopes up, but I read you can save up to 90% on it. Can anyone share their experience?
Yeah, it can cover a lot of the cost! I’ve been paying for Spot Pet Insurance, and they covered a big chunk of my dog’s TPLO surgery. As long as it’s not a pre-existing condition, you should be good.

Wow, that’s good to know! What exactly do you mean by ‘pre-existing condition’? Does that just mean any injury your pet had before the insurance started?
@Campbell
Yeah, exactly. If your dog had the injury before getting insurance or during the waiting period, it won’t be covered. But if the injury happened after the waiting period, you should be fine.
I think TPLO surgery is covered, but it really depends on your plan. Some insurance covers blood work, prescriptions, and even things like hydrotherapy! Make sure to double-check your plan details.

Thanks! I’ll have to check the details. Didn’t know they covered things like hydrotherapy too, that’s pretty awesome!

My vet mentioned TPLO surgery could cost anywhere between $3500-$5500. Definitely a lot, but insurance helps. If you go with Spot Pet Insurance, they cover up to 90% of the costs.
Woah, that’s a huge range! Is there a way to know the final cost upfront? Or does it really depend on the vet and where you live?
Has anyone had TPLO surgery for a cat? I know it’s less common, but I’m curious if the insurance covers that too.

I think it can be done for cats, but yeah, it’s not as common. They usually prefer prosthetic ligaments for cats instead of TPLO. But insurance might still cover it, as long as it’s not a pre-existing thing.
I had to choose between TPLO and other surgeries. It’s definitely not the only option, but the recovery process was smooth. The insurance helped with the cost, but make sure your dog is calm post-surgery.
@Bao
Good tip about the calmness after surgery. My dog is a hyperactive one, so I might need to look into other options.
@Bao
Yeah, that could affect recovery. But don’t stress too much, just follow the aftercare guidelines and everything should go well.
