How do I submit medical records to ASPCA pet insurance?

I just signed up my two rescues. One is 4 years old, and we’ve had her since birth, so we have all her medical records or at least know where to get them. The other rescue, which we took in as a stray last October, has no prior records, and we’re uncertain about his age.

I’ve taken them to various vets and a vaccination clinic, and I’ve added those locations to the portal. Do I need to wait until I file a claim for them to request records from these places? I don’t see any guidance on what to do next on the website, unless it’s related to waiving the waiting period.

Additionally, it seems the rescue organization we got him from might have shut down since October. I’m unable to reach them through any of the contact methods I used before. Will my rescue not be covered if I can’t obtain the older records? I do have a “paper trail” from the foster agreement but nothing formal about the adoption.

Often, the insurance company waits until you file your first claim to review all your medical records. In my opinion, this isn’t ideal since they typically decide what is considered pre-existing at that point, and you’ve usually already paid premiums by then, which seems a bit shady.

I’ve always tried to be proactive by calling them and sending in all my records for review. My success with this approach has been mixed. I’d recommend reaching out to them directly, explaining your situation, and asking for guidance. Since ASPCA works with many shelters and rescues, they’re likely familiar with situations like yours. It’s better to get clarity now rather than during the claims process.

Thanks for the information. I might consider filing a claim for something I expect to be labeled as pre-existing, like allergies. They’ll probably reject it, but it might prompt them to review the records during the process.

I’m not a fan of playing games, but it might be the best way to ensure I’m not paying premiums without any coverage.

I was surprised to hear that they’re not actually affiliated with ASPCA and only license the name, maybe that’s a recent development?

Yeah, I totally get it. I also dislike playing games, but when companies act this way, it feels like we have no other choice. It would be great if, after purchasing a policy, they had 30 days to review your records and give you a clear statement on pre-existing conditions. At least then, you’d have a better idea of where you stand.

From what I remember, JAB Holdings acquired ASPCA around 2022. They do license the ASPCA name but heavily market to shelter pets, so they’re quite familiar with these kinds of situations. I’ve also heard they might be in the process of switching underwriters, which could slow things down a bit.
