How Does Pet Insurance Handle Preexisting Conditions?

How does pet insurance deal with preexisting conditions? My cats are getting older, around 6 years, and they both have preexisting issues that are managed well. I’ve noticed that AKC and Felix cover preexisting conditions after a 365-day waiting period. One of my cats has IBD, and the other had urinary crystals before. They’re both on special prescription diets for their conditions and haven’t had any flare-ups for years. Do you think either of these companies would cover that after the waiting period, or is the prescription food seen as an ongoing treatment?

So, Felix claims they might cover preexisting conditions after 365 days of continuous coverage, but that’s not guaranteed in every state. I’d recommend giving them a call to clarify if your situation is covered. Also, I believe they don’t cover all conditions, like diabetes or Cushing’s disease. Plus, they generally don’t cover prescription foods.

AKC operates in a similar way; they might cover some preexisting conditions after the 365-day period, but again, it’s not the same for everyone. I’d suggest contacting them to discuss your specific circumstances since it’s not all conditions. Sometimes they do cover prescription foods, but only if it’s the primary treatment for the issue.

That makes sense. So neither of these companies requires the pet to be completely free from treatment to qualify, right?

Exactly, they don’t need to be cured, but definitely check with them regarding your pet’s specific conditions. I’d also advise going through the policy documents carefully to ensure you understand everything. Just remember, the availability can vary by state.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll be sure to look into that
