Is Grade 2 Periodontal Disease Considered a Pre-existing Condition for Pet Insurance?

Hey, I just adopted a 2-year-old cat, and during his wellness exam, the vet said he’s in good health overall, but he has some mild plaque and gingivitis, which they diagnosed as Grade 2 periodontal disease.
I haven’t signed up for pet insurance yet since I had to do the wellness exam first, and now I’m realizing this could be seen as a pre-existing condition.
I’m thinking of going with Fetch. They mention that some pre-existing conditions, if curable, might be covered if the pet goes 12 months without any symptoms. If I get my cat’s teeth cleaned regularly, could that possibly cure this, and would it then be covered later on?
I also wanted to add their wellness plan, which covers $200 for dental cleanings. But now that he’s been diagnosed with this, does that mean I won’t even be able to use that benefit?

Congrats on the new kitty! I’m not too familiar with cat coverage, but here’s what I know.
There haven’t been many reports about ‘curing’ conditions with Fetch for future coverage. Fetch is usually pretty generous with dental stuff, though. I think you’ll need to call or email them to get specifics since each company has different rules about what they consider cured. It might also depend on what the vet finds during a cleaning and what Fetch decides is “cured.”
Honestly, my gut says they might push back on this because periodontal disease and gingivitis in cats tend to be ongoing. But it’s worth checking directly with them to be sure.
As for the cleaning, I believe the $200 will cover that part, but not any other treatments like extractions, fluoride, sealants, or diagnostics like X-rays since those are considered treatment for the disease. The cleaning itself should be covered, but definitely call to confirm since things can change!
Good luck.

Thanks so much for the info @Flippa
