Teacup Yorkie Mix Hurt Her Leg!

I have a 5.5 lb teacup yorkie mix and I love her so much. Unfortunately, she decided to skip using the stairs to get off the couch and instead attempted a ‘superhero jump.’ She landed awkwardly and now has a limp and is favoring one of her legs. I’m taking her to the emergency vet for X-rays, an exam, and hopefully just some pain medication. I just wanted to ask, how do you deal with the guilt when your pet gets hurt? I’ve tried everything to accommodate her size and prevent injuries, but I still feel awful about this. She’s just a puppy, only around 1 year old.

Hey, don’t feel bad! You provided the stairs, and she made her own decision to jump. It’s just an accident. You’ve done what you could to protect her. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

Thank you for that! I think my guilt comes from not being able to prevent it. She’s still a puppy, and I just feel like I should have been able to stop her from jumping. I’m relieved I had the care credit card to help with this unexpected vet visit, though.

It’s easy to feel guilty when something happens to our pets, but remember it’s still a puppy phase! Accidents happen, and it doesn’t mean you’re not caring for her. You’re doing great by taking her to the vet for proper care.

Guilt is natural, but the best thing you can do is focus on getting her the care she needs. It’s great you had a plan in place for emergencies. You’ll both get through this!

I completely understand your guilt, but accidents are part of owning a pet, especially a playful pup. She’ll probably bounce back quickly. Keep being the caring pet owner you are!

Just a heads-up, there’s no such thing as a ‘teacup’ sized dog. It’s a marketing term. Your dog’s size is just a normal small dog size for her breed. But no worries, you did the best you could to care for her!

Thanks for pointing that out! My vet used the term, but I appreciate the clarification. I didn’t know much about small dog terms when I first got her.
