What Are People’s Experiences with Felix Cat Pet Insurance? I’m looking for insurance for my cat who has some preexisting conditions like lymphoma and IBD. I spoke with someone from Felix, and they mentioned that they’d cover him, but there’s a one-year waiting period for preexisting conditions, which seems better than other options I’ve found. I haven’t come across many reviews about the company, though. Has anyone here used Felix? What’s been your experience, good or bad? Any insights would really help me out
I don’t know a ton about cat insurance, but I do know that Felix was acquired last year by JAB Holdings, which also owns brands like ASPCA, Figo, Pumpkin, and Spot. It might be tough to find reviews since about 80% of pets with insurance in the US are dogs, so there are fewer insured cats. Hopefully, someone can share their experience
I’m curious about the preexisting condition coverage too. Does your cat need to be symptom-free during that 365-day waiting period? I think some chronic conditions might not be covered.
Also, I noticed Felix doesn’t cover dental illnesses, only accidents. This could be an issue since cats can have dental problems. They also don’t cover prescription food, which a lot of cat owners end up needing
Felix is a newer company around five years old now and their recent acquisition could mean some changes down the road. I’d be a bit cautious about their preexisting condition policy since many companies have tried this and not succeeded. But I could be wrong, and I hope I am
Once you understand more about their coverage for preexisting conditions, it might be good to ask about the specifics and get it in writing. Then you can decide based on your budget and what you need covered. Good luck
That’s a really interesting point. Do you know of any other companies that have a waiting period for preexisting conditions? I thought most just excluded them altogether
The only other company I know of that offers preexisting condition coverage is ASPCA, but they only cover ‘curable’ conditions and your pet needs to be symptom-free for 180 days. They also don’t cover ligament or knee issues. There are probably more restrictions I can’t recall right now, but those are the main ones
You’re right that most pet insurance companies don’t cover preexisting conditions, and it’s unclear how helpful the exceptions from ASPCA or Felix really are. I’ve heard stories that ASPCA can be tricky about what they consider ‘curable,’ and even if your vet supports your claim, they can still deny it. I haven’t heard much about Felix yet, but I’d love to know if anyone has had a positive experience
I’m not quite clear on the 180 days symptom-free part. Would ongoing treatments to keep your pet symptom-free be covered after that period?
From what I understand, with ASPCA, the condition has to be completely cured. So ongoing treatments wouldn’t count. When they say ‘curable,’ they usually mean something that isn’t chronic. For example, if your dog has an ear infection and gets antibiotics, your vet has to confirm it’s cured. Then ASPCA will decide if they agree with the vet. If they do, they start the 180-day period. If you seek treatment for the ear infection again, it cancels the coverage
So, for something like asthma, that wouldn’t ever qualify as ‘curable’ since it’s chronic and can only be managed, not fully cured. Hope that clears things up
Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it. That sounds like a smart move to get everything in writing. I’m a bit worried I might have misunderstood the rep because I’ve had that happen before with my own insurance. If I decide to go with it, I’ll share my review
I’ve heard of Felix and I’m curious to learn more since they focus on cat insurance. It seems like a good idea because a lot of pet insurance is geared towards dogs. I hope they have a solid product since there’s definitely a market for us cat owners
What about the one-year waiting period? Does that mean any issues related to the preexisting condition won’t be covered? Also, what breed is your cat and how old is it?
I haven’t looked into it much, but I’d like to understand the restrictions around the waiting period. Is it for everything, or just for curable conditions?
To explain how the waiting period works: when you submit your medical records, they consider any illness or symptoms from the year before your policy starts as a preexisting condition. For example, if your policy begins on 2/1/2024, they’ll check any records from 2/1/2023 to your waiting period
I would guess that your cat had symptoms of lymphoma and IBD before the waiting period, which could make it ineligible for coverage
