What Are the Challenges of Bringing a Pit Bull to Texas with Pet Insurance?

Hey everyone! I’m 23 and planning to move from Colorado to Galveston, TX soon. I’ve got a 5-year-old cat I’ve had since he was a kitten (no health issues) and a pittie mix, also 5, with some food allergies that cause nail problems, chronic ear infections, and skin issues. I really want to bring both of them with me, but I have no idea where to start looking for pet insurance. My budget’s going to be tight while I get settled in a new state. Any advice? And if it turns out my pittie’s conditions make it too expensive, no worries, he can stay with family if needed.

First off, good luck with the move! Getting some quotes based on your new address would be a good start. Pet insurance costs depend a lot on where you live, the breed of your pet, and their age, so it’s really specific to your situation. You might want to check out Pet Insurance University or Canine Journal to see what companies are available.

It’s tough to give a solid recommendation because policies vary by state and what you get quoted depends on vet costs in your area. So, what I pay might look totally different from your quote.

Just keep in mind that your pittie’s pre-existing conditions won’t be covered, and for your cat, anything noted in their vet records like tartar buildup or itchy skin could be seen as a pre-existing condition too, which could lead to denied coverage.

Best of luck! Hope it all works out for you.

He’s a handsome boy
