What should I keep in mind when selecting a pet insurance provider? I’m trying to figure out which pet insurance to choose. I’m a bit lost on how pet insurance works, and I have an 11-month-old cat that needs a few vaccines. I’ve seen some policies say things like “3 vaccines per year,” which worries me since she needs 3 shots right now. Can anyone suggest an affordable pet insurance that actually covers my cat’s health needs?
I’m sorry if this sounds silly; I really don’t know much about insurance
Don’t worry, Charlotte, this is a common question. I used to work in pet insurance, and I think it can be really helpful if you choose wisely. Just make sure to read the policy thoroughly to understand what you’re getting. Pet insurance usually covers new accidents and illnesses, but wellness services like vaccines and spay/neuter often come at an additional cost since they are predictable expenses.
Some vet clinics provide wellness plans if you only want coverage for those services. Otherwise, pet insurance gives you peace of mind knowing you can handle unexpected costs for accidents or illnesses, whether it’s chronic issues or emergencies.
Also, keep in mind that most pet insurance companies don’t cover preexisting conditions, so check the policy details carefully on that point. There are many options out there, so it can feel overwhelming, but getting the basics down will help you and your pet.
I’ve done a ton of research on this. I skipped Embrace because of the bad reviews, and I also avoided Trupanion due to high premiums. I’m looking at AKC Pet Insurance and SPOT Pet Insurance. My sister has SPOT and loves it for their customer service. I’m going with SPOT because they seem reasonable and cover a lot. I’m getting my new puppy on Sunday and will start insurance then
I struggled to figure it out too, but I chose SPOT as well. I opted out of the wellness plan since it didn’t seem worth it for what it covered. I might just get a wellness plan from my vet instead.
I was in a similar situation with the VCA CareClub. I compared SPOT and Figo, and I decided on Figo because they had similar coverage, lower waiting periods, and great rates especially with a 15% discount for signing up through Costco. I ended up paying $180 for the year with $10,000 coverage, 90% reimbursement, and a $250 deductible, which seemed reasonable to me. It even includes an optional vet exam fee voucher for just $3 a month.
