Hey y’all, I need some advice. I’m stuck between Spot and Lemonade for pet insurance and not sure which is better. I had PetsBest before for my last dog, but they were awful! I just adopted a dog and am fostering two puppies, none of them have insurance yet. Any suggestions? Thanks
My sister uses Spot, and she’s really happy with them. I have MetLife though.
Thanks for the info! I was actually looking into MetLife too. Would you recommend them?
It’s still kinda early to say. I just had my first vet visit last Wednesday, and the bill was $199. I submitted it all to MetLife, but I still have to pay my $250 deductible. I’m about to get my pet on flea and heartworm meds, but I don’t want to get them from the vet since it’s so expensive. Thinking of ordering online and checking with MetLife to see if they cover it.
Lemonade usually reimburses within 2 days, while Spot takes around 5-7 days. Lemonade is cheaper but requires add-ons to match the base coverage Spot offers. It’s nice if you want customizable coverage, but it can also be a bit misleading since Spot includes a lot of stuff automatically. Lemonade’s dental add-ons are better, but Spot has fewer breed restrictions and is available in all 50 states (Lemonade only in 37). Hope that helps!
That’s really interesting! I didn’t realize Spot’s base plan was so comprehensive compared to Lemonade’s. I still haven’t made a decision, but I’m leaning toward Spot now. Given your experience, if you had to recommend a company, which one would it be?
Usually, I recommend Pets Best, Fetch, Healthy Paws, Figo, and Embrace. You’ve had issues with Pets Best before, but they usually have great premiums and dental coverage. Fetch has cool extras like virtual vet visits and stolen pet coverage. Healthy Paws has no payout limits, Figo’s pricing is great, and Embrace offers some of the best overall coverage.
You seem super knowledgeable! Can you tell me more about Fetch? I’ve read their policies and they seem great, but I got spooked by some bad reviews in this thread.
You’ll always find bad reviews for any company, not just insurance. Some people don’t fully read their policies, so they get upset when things aren’t covered. Premiums tend to go up over time due to inflation and vet costs. I’ll check with my contacts at Fetch about the comments you saw, but if it’s a misunderstanding, Fetch is still a solid choice in my book.
Thanks for following up! I’ve been doing tons of research on different companies (got a spreadsheet going with 20+ options ), so any info you can share would be awesome!
Glad to help! I just updated my comparison tables with the latest coverage info, so feel free to check them out when you’re ready.
That’s super helpful! I’m making a chart comparing things like coverage for foreign body ingestion, alternative therapies, and more for a bunch of companies. Once I’m done, I’ll cross-check with your tables and might post it here for others.
Foreign body ingestion should be covered by all providers, from what I know. I’ve also recently updated the info on alternative and physical therapy. For cats, I recommend looking into Pets Best, Embrace, and Trupanion for the best dental coverage. Cats are prone to gum disease, and most insurers don’t cover that, so it’s worth checking out.
Thanks for the heads up! I noticed some policies limit foreign body coverage to just twice in 18 months. One of my cats loves chewing on plastic, so that’s something I’m cautious about. I’m leaning toward Embrace right now, but it’s pricey. Fetch also seems to have good dental coverage for cats.
I usually focus on dog insurance, so it’s interesting to hear your perspective as a cat owner. I’d love to see your final chart when you’re done if you’re willing to share!
Definitely. I should be done in a few days and will send it your way once it’s ready. Glad to see there are others like you doing the legwork to help people make informed decisions!
