What Should I Consider When Choosing Pet Insurance for My Klee Kai Mix?

I just came back from the store with my three-year-old Klee Kai mix, and I’m really worried because she started coughing. I was carrying her when she had this honking cough. It doesn’t happen often, maybe once every couple of months, and usually, I can ease it by plugging one nostril, but this time it didn’t help. I’m feeling pretty shaken up right now.

I want to get pet insurance before I take her to the vet again in case she gets diagnosed with something serious. I’m really hoping it’s not tracheal collapse…

I’ve heard a lot about Lemonade being popular, but I know someone who switched to Costco pet insurance because it was more budget-friendly. My dog trainer recommended Healthy Paws and Trupanion. Has anyone had experience with these providers or any advice to share?

I’d stay away from Healthy Paws. They were great at first, but they recently raised our rates significantly, and the customer service has really gone downhill.

Given your dog’s coughing, I’d be concerned that it might be considered a pre-existing condition, which could affect coverage. All pet insurance companies have waiting periods, with Pumpkin being the shortest at 14 days, while most are around 30 days. I’d recommend taking your pup to the vet first to make sure everything is okay, and then look into insurance for the future just in case.

Have you taken her to the vet yet? What were the results?

I have some interviews lined up this week, but I’ll schedule a vet appointment for her next week. I’ll keep you all updated after that.
