Why isn’t Physicians Mutual Pet Insurance more popular? Has anyone heard of them or had any experience? They seem like a good alternative. Most companies are owned by one private equity firm (I heard one company owns 40% of the market). But Physicians Mutual actually underwrites and services their policies. They’re not the cheapest, but they offer comprehensive benefits. I’m considering them for my healthy 4-year-old dog because of the rate hikes with our current carrier over the last four years.
I think it’s because they’ve only been around for a couple of years, so not many people have experience with them yet. I’d love to hear some reviews! It’s great to see established insurance companies entering the pet insurance space. JAB Holdings bought around 10 companies before and during COVID. It’s crazy. I’m not sure if they have 40% of the market share, but it wouldn’t surprise me. Just be careful about your pet’s pre-existing conditions when shopping around. They’re usually not covered by any company, which is how they keep us locked into these policies.
Thanks for the heads up. It looks interesting so far. I’ll set aside a few hours to dig into the details. I run the price wizards for kittens through 15 years to get an idea over time. Their coverage starts at $7/month, and there’s a note that suggests they cover dental as an add-on. I’ll start reading the fine print, as that would be very helpful if there’s no 13-month rule.
I’m also considering this company for my 4-month-old Maine Coon kitten. I like that there’s no long wait period for orthopedic conditions, which is great since purebred Maine Coons can be genetically predisposed to those issues. The quote seems almost too good to be true compared to the other 10+ companies I’ve looked at. Can you share any information you’ve found while digging into the details? Also, can you explain what you mean by “run the price wizards”? Thanks.
I’ve never heard of them.
