So I read somewhere that cayenne pepper isn’t poisonous to dogs and it can even stop them from digging or chewing. But now I’m wondering, what actually happens if a dog eats cayenne pepper? Is it really safe, or are there side effects I should know about? I’d love to hear if anyone’s tried this method before or has any tips!
Yeah, cayenne pepper isn’t poisonous, but too much of it can irritate a dog’s mouth or even upset their stomach. I tried sprinkling some to stop my pup from digging… it worked, but I made sure to use it sparingly.

Did your dog react badly to it at all? Like sneezing or coughing?
@Colby
Not really, just a little nose twitching lol. I made sure not to overdo it. It’s more about discouraging the behavior without making them super uncomfortable.
I’ve used cayenne pepper to stop chewing. It works, but FYI, dogs might paw at their face if it irritates them.

Paw at their face? That sounds intense. Do you think it’s worth the discomfort it causes?

Depends on how bad the chewing is. If they’re destroying furniture, it might be worth a try. Just don’t use too much.
Anyone know what happens if a dog sniffs cayenne pepper? My dog is super curious, and I don’t want to accidentally irritate his nose.

Sniffing it can cause sneezing, coughing, or drooling. It’s not dangerous, but it can be uncomfortable for them.

Got it, thanks! I’ll keep that in mind if I decide to try it.
What’s a good amount of cayenne to use without hurting the dog? I don’t want to overdo it.

A light sprinkle should do the trick. You’re just trying to make the area unappealing, not cause pain.

Thanks! I was worried about using too much. I’ll try a tiny bit first and see how it goes.
What does GI tract mean? Someone mentioned it in another thread, and I’m not sure what that is.

GI stands for gastrointestinal! It’s basically the digestive system, like the stomach and intestines.

Ohhh, thanks for explaining! Makes sense why too much cayenne could upset that.
