Is it okay to toss dog poop bags in neighborhood bins during walks?

I live in a medium-sized town in the Midwest of the USA.

When I take my dogs out for walks, I always pick up their poop in small bags. I usually carry it home, but sometimes, if I’m passing a garbage bin out by the curb, I’ve thought about just dropping it in there. A few times, if it was trash day, people have seen me and said it was fine. I’ve never done it without permission, but it got me thinking…

Would you mind if someone tossed a bagged dog poop into your bin on the street? Or does it seem rude? Does this depend on where you live? And do you have public bins in your area?

Thanks for your thoughts!

I usually carry it home or wait to find a public trash can. Wouldn’t feel right tossing it in a neighbor’s bin without asking, and I’d be uncomfortable if someone did that to me.

Same here. I only use public bins or my own.

Glad to help! Have you heard of ‘Dumper Cables’? Funny name, but what you found looks better.

Throwing dog poop in someone’s private bin is rude. If the bag breaks, it’s gross and could leave a mess. Just take it home.

But if it’s by the curb, isn’t it kinda public? It’s already out there for trash.

@Remy
Just because it’s on the curb doesn’t mean it’s public. It’s still private unless the owner says otherwise.

@Remy
Think about it like this: if someone left rotting food in your bin, would you be okay with that? Putting anything in someone else’s bin isn’t really right.

I get your point, but if it’s just a small dog poop bag and on trash day, is it that big a deal? At least it keeps the street clean.

@Remy
I rely on assistance to get my bin to the curb. One time it stayed out all week because no one brought it back. This could be an issue if people used it.

@Remy
It’s a garbage can, it’s supposed to have garbage in it!

@Remy
That logic is like saying anyone can use my parked car just because it’s on the street. It’s still private.

@Remy
You’re totally missing the point.

What if it’s in a sealed bag?

Even sealed bags can break sometimes.

@Devi
And even with ‘scent-proof’ bags, it can still smell, especially when it’s hot outside.

Exactly! It’s gross.
